Our work

Encouraging a new imagination of the possible with the realism

that only the Gospel can give

"To emerge from this crisis better than before, we have to do so together” (General Audience, 2 Sept. 2020)Listening, connecting and inspiring people, and world and church leaders, so that they may become promoters of change and regenerators of a more just society.

Inspired by Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti, the Commission enacts Pope Francis’ call to prepare the future through science, theological reflection, and collaboration with others, while prioritizing the least among us. Drawing on the experiences of local communities, academic experts and global platforms, the Commission seeks to alleviate immediate suffering, and usher forth the transformation of hearts, minds, and structures towards a better future for all.

The Commission reports directly to the Holy Father and is housed within the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development under the leadership of Cardinal Peter Turkson. It has five working groups, with leadership drawn across different dicasteries. The collaborative, interdicasterial design draws on individual and collective expertise to achieve what can only be done together, and to encourage a new imagination of the possible.

After a year of listening to and accompanying local churches and  analysing the multiple dimensions of the pandemic and its impacts across the world, the Commission is pursuing vital changes, starting with very specific areas that matter most to people, families and communities— vaccines, food and jobs.
