February 8, 2026, marks the World Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Human Trafficking, established by Pope Francis in 2015. The theme of the twelfth edition of this day is “Peace begins with dignity: A global call to end human trafficking.” Pope Leo XIV reminds us of the importance of respecting one of the fundamental principles of the individual: human dignity, understood as an essential pillar for building authentic peace.
As the international anti-trafficking network Talitha Kum points out, the day coincides with the liturgical memorial of Saint Josephine Bakhita, a Sudanese nun who was kidnapped and enslaved at an early age and later became a universal symbol of the Church's commitment to the fight against human trafficking. Through prayer, reflection, and participation, we renew our commitment and strengthen our unity in the struggle to restore the value of the person.
The journey begins with a prayer vigil on February 5 at 5:30 p.m. (CET) at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome, during which the Undersecretary of the Dicastery, Mons. Jozef Barlaš, will offer a moment of reflection and meditation. Socially committed communities gather in the capital, creating a shared moment and a broader expression of the many realities linked to human trafficking.
On February 6 at 11:00 a.m. (CET), the online Pilgrimage of Prayer takes place. During this global event, aimed at prayer and raising awareness against trafficking, participants from Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Australia come together with the promise to commit themselves “being a voice for our brothers and sisters, who have been humiliated in their dignity. Let us all pray.” (Pope Francis, Angelus Prayer, February 8, 2015). On this occasion, the Prefect of the Dicastery, Cardinal Michael Czerny, S.J., will offer a reflection on human dignity and a thought of closeness to the victims of trafficking.
The Eucharistic celebration will take place on February 8 at 1:00 p.m. (CET) at St. Peter's Basilica, followed by participation in the Angelus prayer with Pope Leo XIV.
