Cardinal Fabio Baggio in Costa Rica to promote the pastoral care of human mobility

Cardinal Fabio Baggio, C.S., the Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development, participated in the 11th Meeting of Bishops and Pastoral Care Agents of Human Mobility, an important regional meeting that took place in San José, Costa Rica, from 18 to 22 August 2025.

The event, that brought together representatives from the episcopal conferences of North America, Central America and the Caribbean, had the objective of reinforcing pastoral collaboration in the region, through the definition of an integrated pastoral plan. The meeting was inspired by the pastoral document “Lo vide, si avvicinò e si prese cura di lui: [He saw him, came near and took care of him], which offers guidelines and pastoral orientations to accompany persons on the move, in particular migrants, refugees and evacuees.

Cardinal Baggio spoke on Tuesday 19 August with a theological reflection on the role of the bishop and the challenges posed by the new regional migration context. In addition, he presided at the Eucharistic Celebration on Thursday 21 August in the Cathedral of St. James the Apostle in Cartago, at the conclusion of the mission.

The presence of Cardinal Baggio is an integral part of the effort of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development to sustain the local Churches, particularly where human mobility represents one of the principal social and pastoral challenges, and continues a series of regional meetings in which the Superiors of the Dicastery participated (for example: Colombia, 2020; El Salvador, 2023; Panama, March 2024; Panama, August 2024).
