The Holy Father has appointed Monsignor Jozef Barlaš, previously an Official in the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State, as Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
Monsignor Jozef Barlaš was born on May 7, 1985, in Snina (Slovakia). He was ordained a priest on June 19, 2010, for the Archdiocese of Košice. He obtained his Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University in 2022. Since October 1, 2020, he has been an Official in the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State. He was appointed Chaplain to His Holiness in 2025. In addition to Slovak, he speaks Italian, English, and Spanish.
The new Undersecretary commented on his new role: “I would like to begin my service at the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development bearing in mind that ‘the whole is greater than the part’ (Evangelii Gaudium, 237). This applies both to the specific mission of this Curial institution and to our personal contributions.“Not by being ‘alone’ but by being ‘together’ do we become a true instrument of service to the Holy Father and to the Church.”
